Most of the sun shades I've seen are detachable - Usually used when your getting glare from sun or to reduce the visibility of heat waves coming off your barrell (good in prarie dog town shooting). If the shade is long and left on the scope your field of view may likewise be reduced - don't know if it answers your question ?
