In my experience pintails are pretty much gone about now. I have seen very few over the years using the river at all let alone late. Mallards are the primary duck on the river late in the season.

Often will see a few even when only big water is the only stuff that isn't frozen, but for the most part they are known as fairly early migrators. I know someone who said one came into their spread along the river in ND in late December last year.

There were a lot around my area during the first weekend of deer season last year that came down with the mallards, flocks of 20-50 working fields. This year we have shot some a couple days ago and are still seeing them mixed in with mallards.
