In east central ND the upland hatch looks ok, but the ducks have renested many times from predation. I've seen few hatches of mallards so far. Jumped one covey of pheasants in early June that could fly already, and the grouse are doing fine. Haying here didn't affect it much. Last year when the CRP was hayed off, it made better cover this year. I burned a piece early last spring that looks great now.
Haying too early?
I have noticed ALOT of hay already being cut this year and have heard the same from others around the state. Some of this on state managed lands too. I saw 3 hen turkeys wandering around in one of the cut areas that seemed to be looking for their little ones. I know it used to be advised to wait until after July 5th to cut.
Has anyone else noticed this around the state and what affect do you think it will have on bird reproduction this year? Not only turkeys and upland birds but on the waterfowl as well.
