My Favorite Things

Smallies on orange jigs and crappies on minnows,
Waking up to the lake sitting calm out the windows,
Shore lunch fillets as the hot oil sings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Black striped largemouth and polka-dot gators,
Fishing spring walleye in holey green waders,
Being outdoors, where the phone never rings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

White bass at sundown, on ultra light tackle,
Casting out buggers, brown with grizzly hackle,
Watching fish leave the water, tethered by strings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Bar exams suck,
Bad poker luck,
Vikings still look sad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
And then I don’t feel so bad.

Cast and blast combos in southern Barnes County,
Pheasants amidst a just harvested bounty,
Flushing so close you get hit by their wings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Chasing grouse until sundown out in the badlands,
Sighting in for a dove flying off like a madman,
The smell of gun powder, the shot as it rings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Watching the herd bolting out of their cover,
The side of a buck where my crosshairs now hover,
Second day backstraps, a meal made for kings,
These are a few of my favorite things,

When the knot breaks,
When the gun jams,
Murphy’s law is bad,
I just think of a few of my favorite things,
And then I don’t feel so sad.

Vexilar lit up, o’er flooded slough perches,
The bend of an ice rod as huge walleye surges,
Augers that run, making clean straight cuttings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Light biting crappie, on minnows and waxies,
Hauling equipment in over-ice taxis,
Six layers of clothing for what winter brings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Sitting at my vise viewing deer hunting programs,
Minus fifty windchill. Go outside? I’ll say “no ma’ams”
And tie up spring flies from feathers and strings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

When the wind shifts,
Eight foot snowdrifts,
Worst winters we’ve had,
I just think of my times, spent in our outdoors,
