Kirby Puckett Dies at age of 45

Postby Chris Hustad » Mon Mar 06, 2006 9:35 pm

Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett died Monday, a day after suffering a massive stroke at his Arizona home and undergoing surgery for bleeding on the brain. Kirby Puckett was only 45.

Baseball and sports in general has lost a true legend today. I cannot count the nights my parents let me stay up late to watch extra innings...the world series in 1987 was probably the best sporting event I've ever witnessed.

You will be missed Kirby...

Chris I was in ND goose hunting when the 1987 WS was on, all the hunters in the motel had on their TVs on late watching the games too. More than a few of us woke up late for hunting in the morning, but what a good reason to over sleep. Actually I was in ND during both WS.

What many of the young guys may not recall was how bad the Twins stunk the year before. And watching them improve in 87 you could just see it week by week them getting better that season.

Watching Kirby at the game signing autographs, etc..with the kids always put a smile on my face.

How about 3? I had also posted a link over in the Sports Forum (where it belongs) and didn't notice that we already had threads up!

 I remember sitting there watching the Homer Hankies wave that year! That was a great hunting season too... It was the "perfect storm" of great things that year! I still have the "Wheaties" box from that team!

I remember this on Letterman, Puck gave the list on the show, it was pretty funny. This is the biggest loss in Minnesota sports history in my opinion but maybe a smile on our face is what Puck would prefer from all of his fans and remember stuff like this too. So here it is. Thanks again Puck.

WCCO ended their telecast on the lighter side with Pucketts' appearance on David Letterman: "Top 10 ways to mispronounce Kirby Puckett's name"

10. Koobey Pickett
9. Creepy Pockets
8. Bernie Crumpet
7. Turkey Bucket
6. Buddy Hackett
5. The Puckett formerly known as Kirby
4. Punky Brewster
3. Kent Hrbek
2. There once was a man from Nantuckett who Kirbied his own Puckett
1. Englepuck Kirbydink

A sad day no doubt for sports fans in Minnesota and .....North Dakota for that matter. I remember sitting in School listening to playoff games on the radio not caring what the teacher was talking about. I have never seen anyone with that short of legs fly around the bases, what a memory.

Thanks for the 12 years Kirby

Kirby went way beyond the midwest. The whole nation is in mourning. He was loved and respected everywhere. A true hall of famer in every way.

Every time I hear his name I always think of his problems at the Red Stone in Eden Prairie. I have two friends that got subpoenaed in that mess. They were with Kirby that night....first time they met him. They thought he was a great guy and were shocked with what happened/didn't happen.
