I saw a guy fishing a canal at night with lights along it look like he was close to his limit and he was catching them left and right on red spikes and a small tear drop jig. Since they move around in schools and end up under your hole, that causes the "spurt". The more you drill and move, the better the chance you have to stay on top of fish.
